Regarding slow starts to bowl games, I don’t think that was the case in the 2008 Alamo Bowl. We would have had a 10-3 lead going into the half if not for the Maclin return. The slow start to the Outback Bowl mostly resulted from Kafka’s nightmarish start too, including the 101 yard pick 6. This year was just a continuation of the defensive struggles from the previous 2 games. And the offense was loaded with freshman, so a slow start there wasn’t that surprising, either.
I don’t think there’s much doubt that Colter is going to see some time at QB/WR/RB next year when Persa is healthy, but it’s probably too early to say whether he or Watkins will be the true backup if Persa gets injured. I wouldn’t count out Siemian, either. But let’s hope that Persa stays healthy for the full season and the other guys have plenty of time to develop by their junior seasons.
I really don’t know what happened with the defense. Losing Browne to injury at some point during the game didn’t help with the d-line pass rush or blitzing, but they’ve got a lot to figure out this spring and summer.
Keep up the good work. It’s nice to have an NU sports podcast.
Thanks for listening! We’re real excited to be joining the NU discussion community.
You have a good point on the Alamo bowl from ’08, and it was the same story at ’05 Sun vs UCLA… up 22-0 at one point in the first quarter. Very early for depth chart predictions… just wanted to make the point that Watkins isn’t done by any means; also agree we’ll see Colter on the field next year as well, regardless of depth chart (the sets in Dallas with Colter and Watkins both playing made me think of the days with Kafka/Peterman on the field).
Thanks again for the comment – we’re always looking for feedback and discussion topics.
